SCANDIENNE

Scandienne is a wordplay on Scandinavian + Parisienne. The brand mixes the two cultural aesthetics since the founder Sandra was born on a farm in Sweden and is a lover of workwear, but also lived in Paris for years with all it’s art and couture.

DESIGN

"Sandra Nicole Freiman designs fashion worlds with her brand Scandienne. With a conceptual approach, Sandra tries to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way, weaves a fairytale like story to be unfolded together with the viewer and still somehow believes in the idea of function following form in a work."

"Her work responds to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. By applying a poetic and often metaphorical language, she uses a visual vocabulary that addresses many different social and political issues. Time and memory always play a key role. And so by merging several seemingly incompatible worlds into a new universe, she wants to amplify the desire for the familiar; for faith in man and hope in the unfolding globalized cold world."

FITTING & BRIEF

Sandra briefed her designs and ideas to me, she had the sketches and tech packs ready for me. Sandra sourced organic cotton and sustainable trims for her collections, her values are matching mines when it comes to conscious designs and sustainable products.

PATTERN DRAFTING

The blouse "Maud" is created in my pattern program in sample size S, together with full grading size XS-XL.

CUT, SEW & DYE THE SAMPLE COLLECTION

The products are all handmade in the AMK atelier. They are carefully cut out, matching the patterns, and stitched together. We arranged a digital fitting as my atelier is located in Amsterdam and Sandra is based in Stockholm.

NATURAL DYE - INDIGO & AVOCADOS & ONION PEEL

The detachable collars are dyed in beautiful natural color. The blue shade comes from the plant called Indigofera, and the pigments attach to the fabric by oxidations. The pink is extracted from avocado pits and peels, and applied to the fabric in dye-baths. In a similar fashion, the yellow comes form the peels from onions.
